The McCrae family lived on the Mornington Peninsula for 7 years. Andrew McCrae attempted to eke out a living on their 20,500 acre run. His attempt was unsuccessful, but the family’s experience of life as settlers along the coast of Port Phillip Bay was edifying. Georgiana and her 7 children documented the world around them through writing, illustration and the collecting of regional flora and fauna.
Drawn in 1851 and entitled “Home property as surveyed by George Gordon McCrae” this illustration is an important record of the extent and layout of the Arthur’s Seat run towards the end of the McCrae families occupation.
The family left the run in 1851. Upon leaving Georgiana McCrae noted in her journal “Arthur’s Seat, October 6th, 1851. Yet a deeper sorrow has now arrived when I must say good-bye to my mountain home, the house I have built, the garden I have formed.”
