Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary – Gold Coast

Iconic 1940s established Gold Coast tourist destination.

Voted one of the Gold Coast’s most popular tourist destinations, Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is the crown jewel of the National Trust of Australia (Queensland) properties. As one of Queensland’s earliest nature-based tourist destinations, the Sanctuary is a physical embodiment of everything the National Trust of Australia (Queensland) represents: dedication to conserving our nation’s Indigenous, natural and historic heritage and culture.

With Blinky Bill present for daily shows, amazing viewing experiences available at the Wildlife Hospital and 27 hectares of natural bushland and rainforest settings – Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is the ultimate holiday adventure for the entire family.

Established in 1947 by beekeeper and flower-grower, Alex Griffiths, the very origins of the park are rooted in conservation efforts. Instead of hunting or displacing the flocks of wild lorikeets residing in the region, Griffiths sought to redirect their attention from ravaging his prized blooms by providing regular feedings each day. These feedings quickly gained popularity amongst locals and tourists alike, and thus, the Currumbin Bird Sanctuary was born. In 1995 the park’s name was changed to Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary to better reflect the diverse range of the various animals and conservation efforts within.

Each day brings visitors face to face with extraordinary wildlife in exciting shows and hands-on encounters. Explore the exhibits with the kids, cuddle a koala, meet Blinky Bill, take a Segway Safari and get up close and personal for a #kangarooselfie in the Roo Paddock! With information boards in abundance and over 600 staff and volunteers onsite, the park offers the perfect opportunity to connect with and be educated by active conservation efforts on a personal level.

The park also boasts an amazing onsite wildlife hospital, founded by Alex Griffiths 63 years ago. Visitors can have a bird’s eye view of our vets working and performing surgeries, and can experience the depth of care that Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary has for the welfare of the Australian native animal population. With an annual intake of over 10,500 animals, the hospital is one of the busiest wildlife hospitals in the world.

Open year-round from 8am to 5pm daily (excluding Anzac Day and Christmas), Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is a favourite with the local and international community alike. Children under four incur no entry fee, and General Admission prices can be found below.
