Perth & Fremantle
Week 1
Join us at the WA launch of the Australian Heritage Festival with the Hon David Templeman MLA and the Madjitil Moorna Choir (Fremantle). From Hooves to Highways, head to the Museum of Perth and look back to a fascinating time when cars first appeared on our roads (Perth) and the City of Perth looks at Perth Then and Now (Perth) Join in on the fun at the Children’s Easter Day at Peninsula Farm (Maylands) and enjoy Free Entry Weekends at the National Heritage site, No. 1 Pump Station (Mundaring) or Free Entry Sundays at East Perth Cemeteries.
Week 2 & 3
Many organisations are hosting ANZAC Day events and you can join the National Trust at our Sunset Service (Maylands) or for a screening of Woodbridge at War. Explore East Perth Cemeteries with the kids at the Archaeology Open Day (East Perth). Discover Canning Through A Camera Lens (Riverton), learn about Our History on the Airwaves with Capital Radio (Ardross) and discover the Life Of The Harbour (Fremantle). Make sure you check out Fish Guts and All – The Return to explore the undercurrents that created the fishing industry in Freo (Fremantle). Learn how to use DNA testing to discover your family’s roots at an Introduction to DNA for Genealogists (Woodvale). The WA State Heritage & History Conference commences at the end of April (Perth) and you can attend a Vintage Film Night (Cannington).
Week 4 & 5
Hear from Peter Greste as he looks at fake news as it relates to the past, present and the future (Fremantle). Take the kids down to Samson House and join in on ROCK & READ (Fremantle). Explore Weddings Through Time (Rockingham), walk in the footsteps of pioneers with Guildford walking tours, discover what it takes to restore a vintage bus at the Bus Depot Tours (Whiteman), explore the Derbarl Yerrigan Swan River, from the Nyoongar Dreamtime through colonial settlement to the present day at TIDES: Swan River Stories. Be guided by heritage specialists along a section of the WadjupGabbilju foreshore at Along the Convict Fence (Shelley) and the Kalamunda History Village celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Perth Hills (Kalamunda).
Regional – South & Peel
Come and celebrate at Back to Blyethwood on Mother’s Day (Pinjarra), Drink in the history of Bunbury’s beautiful Victorian pubs on the Bunbury Pub Walk (Bunbury). Enjoy Family Fun at the Farm at Strawberry Hill (Albany), enjoy a documentary that looks at the Cheynes Beach Whaling Company closure and reflections on what became a defining moment in history (Torndirrup).
Regional – Wheatbelt
Come and learn about the hidden past of Greenhills, a quiet rural community and hear what went on there a hundred or so years’ ago (Greenhills). Buttons and Bones – York Convicts looks at the convicts stationed at York Convict Depot in a fascinating new display that draws upon recent archaeological excavations. Enjoy the York Courthouse Complex with a free guided tour or as part of the free entry weekends (York).
Regional – North & East
Enjoy free entry to Central Greenough (Greenough) and Warden Finnerty’s residence (Coolgardie) over the weekends of the festival.
