Robb College demolition begins

Following news that demolition of New England University’s Robb College has started, the National Trust (NSW) has written again to the Ministers for Heritage & Education urging a decision on the State Heritage Register listing recommended by the NSW Heritage Council.

Section 34 of the Heritage Act, 1977 states that within 14 days after the Heritage Council makes a recommendation for listing to the Minister, the Minister must:

  1. decide whether or not to direct the listing and inform the Heritage Council of that decision, or
  2. request the Independent Planning Commission to review the matter.

The Heritage Council recommended the listing in 2014 and three successive Ministers for Heritage have not made this decision as required by the legislation.

The National Trust (NSW) is investigating the number of recommendations from the Heritage Council that have not been acted upon within the statutory time frame.
