Fanny Balbuk: Perth Resistance Fighter

On the 110th anniversary of her death, the National Trust of Western Australia welcomes the opportunity to share the extraordinary life of Fanny Balbuk Yooreel.

Arguably the most important Whadjuk woman of the 19th century, this traditional Swan River woman lived through the British colonisation of Perth. Her powerful story and response to the relentless development of Perth has been shared in new ways by Elder Whadjuk women, by talented quilters and the community during the 2017 Australian Heritage Festival.

Supported by Lotterywest and partners City of Perth, ARC Centre of Excellence for the History of Emotions and the Department of Aboriginal Affairs, the National Trust of Western Australian has produced a self guided tour, documentary and new publication to mark Fanny Balbuk Yooreel’s life.
