Heritage Awards VIC

Awards are presented in five categories:

Adaptive Reuse of a Heritage Place

Adaptive reuse is a process of changing a disused or redundant place for a different or creative purpose. Finalists demonstrate outstanding adaptive reuse of a heritage place whilst having minimal impact on its cultural heritage significance and setting.

New Work/Development within a Heritage Area

The ‘New Work/Development’ within a Heritage Area’ award recognises either:

• Sympathetic design of new buildings or structures within heritage conservation areas or within a cultural heritage landscape; or
• Sympathetic design of additions/exterior alterations to heritage buildings or structures within heritage conservation areas or within a cultural heritage landscape.

Conservation of a Heritage Place, Historic Collection or Tradition

The ‘Conservation of a Heritage Place or Historic Collection’ award recognises best practice in looking after any heritage place or collection/individual item so as to retain what it is that makes it significant.

Special Heritage Trade Skills

The ‘Specialist Heritage Skills’ award recognises tradespersons, professionals, researchers or conservators who workusing specialist knowledge or traditional methods/craftsmanship, demonstrating heritage best practice to a very highstandard. Finalists demonstrate excellence in their field.

Heritage Innovation

The ‘Heritage Innovation Award’ is an open category that recognises best practise, innovative work that contributes to one or more of the following:

• Our knowledge of heritage
• The protection, conservation, preservation and/or management of heritage
• Supporting community members who care for heritage (i.e. assistance, advice and incentives)
• Communicating, promoting and celebrating heritage

2023 Heritage Awards recognise projects and people in the community who’ve demonstrated excellence in the preservation, restoration, and reuse of heritage places on the Mornington Peninsula.

The awards are a joint program of the National Trust Mornington Peninsula branch and Mornington Peninsula Shire and this year nominations are invited in the following five categories:

• Restoration of a heritage place: have you brought back a building, landscape, wetlands, cemetery, monument, or heritage garden to its former glory?
• Creative reuse of a heritage place: have you changed a disused heritage place and given it a different purpose?
• Sustainability and/or greening of a heritage place: does your restoration demonstrate environmental sustainability?
• Specialist heritage trade skills: are you a tradesperson who’s used specialist skills or traditional methods on a heritage place?
• Excellence in interpretive signage: have you organised high quality signage to contribute to the heritage of our Peninsula?

Nominations open on Monday 30 January and close on Friday 10 March 2023.

Presented by Geelong and Region Branch National Trust, with the City of Greater Geelong, the Heritage Awards aim to recognise and acknowledge the contribution made to heritage conservation by owners, architects, designers and specialized skilled tradespeople.

This annual event is for recent work which has been completed according to heritage guidelines, which may be in any of the following areas:

• Restoration of a Heritage Place
• Creative Reuse of a Heritage Place
• New Work/Development within a Heritage Area
• Sustainability and Greening of a Heritage Place
• Public access to a Heritage Place

Heritage includes buildings, gardens and objects, public and private places. Heritage places are an integral part of the Greater Geelong community and the Awards are part of the National Trust and Council’s commitment to celebrate and promote our heritage
