Bondi Road Heritage Tour – from Council Chambers

This Heritage Tour of Bondi Road starts at the present Council Chambers and explores the history and heritage of several buildings on Bondi Road, Waverley Park and some adjoining streets such as Penkivil and Bennett Streets and some stories of families who have lived there.

The story of the building of the Council Chambers is shared before walking along Bondi Road to the School of Arts for an inspection. On the way we note the terraces and different styles of architecture of the Masonic Hall, flats, shop premises and garage . In Penkivil Street several stories are told of families who once lived there. Across the road into Bennett Street we discuss one of the pioneering families of Waverley – The Dicksons and their contribution to the Waverley area.

The importance of trams as a means of early transport together with the horse and cart and a private bus assisted further development of businesses and shops along Bondi Road and surrounding streets. The natural stream which flowed along Bondi Road near Flood Street and Waverley Park was discussed by Waverley Council in 1876 and steps were taken to conserve this local water supply.
Other features in Waverley Park are the Oval, football fields, netball courts, Memorials and Margaret Whitlam Centre.
